What determines a person’s identity? Is it your job? Is it how you act? Is it what you say? Many people associate their identity with their achievements. What have I done to contribute to society?
“To the degree that we embrace the truth that our identity is not rooted in our success, power, or popularity, but in God’s infinite love, to that degree can we let go of our need to judge. – Henri J.M.Nouwen
Everyone wants to put people in categories. You know, “there’s only two types of people in the world.” Rich or poor, leaders or followers, and Christian or non-Christian. This mentality is one that instills division among people. It says that from someones perspective one side is better than the other. I would like to offer that there is only one type of person on Earth. The person loved by Father God. All of us are loved by Him.
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in him would not perish, but have everlasting life. – John 3:16
That puts us all in the same boat. We are no better than anyone else. All we can do is take the love our Father gives us and share it with those who don’t know they are loved. This is the foundation of what Jesus followers are to live out. The greatest commandments Jesus gave us.
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in do the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” – Mathew 22:36-40
So, who are we? What determines your identity? It is simply this: I am loved and I am to love. If you live from a place of this identity and follow the Lord’s commands, you will never have to question who you are.
Being able to live from this mindset has allowed me to release fears, worries, and doubts about my past, my present, and my future. I am less afraid to speak in front of people I don’t know. I worry less about what people might think. But most importantly, I am freed to listen to what the Holy Spirit might be asking me to do and not feel afraid to follow.
Now I know I may have over simplified it, but it really shouldn’t be hard., Your identity is solely based on your position as a child of the Father. Remember that.
